Coming Up at ArtsCenter Stage

By Wm W. Whitman and composer Jonathan Price
May 10-12 & 16-19
As a young, brash America surges toward new frontiers and unimagined trials, Walt Whitman’s bold expansive chants ring out, seemingly, from nowhere. In this epic adventure, Walt’s journey leads from Long Island to Brooklyn to New Orleans to the Civil War and beyond. Walt is moved that the masses flock to great oratory, the hip hop of the day. The street opera of diverse immigrant languages and dialects becomes one American voice singing. Walt carries the opera of the concert hall out into the open air. And his democracy brazenly embraces every man or woman as friend, comrade and lover. The distinct moments of Walt Whitman’s life and the mystical ones coalesce into his national anthem of “pomes” that remains both glorious and confounding to this day. How American! A magical, majestic telling of Whitman’s life and times, Walt tells the story of America’s first bard on epic portions of a life lived to the fullest. Walt is a Southeast Premiere.
