Class description:

In this class, the instructor and students will discuss the physical part of art history: how the old masters made their paintings. In the instructor’s words: “We’re going to get really sort of boots on the ground about things like what kind of materials did they use, which colors, which kinds of brushes, what kind of medium, where you place the canvas, what kind kind of canvas, what kind of preparation, where to place them on the floor. Different techniques like scumbling and glazing, different principles like fat over lean and really just figuring out how all of these sort of sciences, so to speak, have been developed over the course of about 500 years . . . to give us a gift of a sort of perfect technical knowledge of how to create healthy paintings which will last for centuries and will be beautiful, interesting, and will allow the student to really use all of the tools in their toolkit to express themselves.”

Instructor Sam Bordley graduated from Durham School of the Arts with a pathway in painting, then earned a bachelor’s degree in Art History from VCU. He studied at the Academy of Classical Design with Dr. Jeffery Mims, then earned his master’s degree in Art History from John Cabot University in Rome. Following this, he moved to Florence for three years of study in old master practice painting with Charles H. Cecil.
