Emery – Thursdays, Feb 11- Mar 4, 6-9 pm (In-person)
Interested in learning the basics of throwing on a potter’s wheel? This introductory class is for you! Students will spend four class periods learning the fundamentals of wheelthrowing from start to finish. We will build confidence on the wheel and create a foundational understanding of how to approach the various stages of working with clay. We will use three class periods to get a feel for centering, pulling basic cylindrical forms, and trimming. Our final session will focus on basic glazing techniques. Newcomers and students with some experience alike are welcome to this course.
About the instructor: Meredith Emery is an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, photography, print media, sound and performance. She graduated from UNC-CH in 2019 with a BFA in Studio Art, focusing in ceramic sculpture, with a minor in Geography. She currently lives in Carrboro, serving as the Ceramics Studio Coordinator at the ArtsCenter. Her work is informed by public histories and environmental concerns, engaging artistic practice as a space to redefine collective systems of value, learning, and labor. Tuition includes the cost of a bag of clay, glaze materials, and firing fees. Students should come to the back of The ArtsCenter building to access the ceramics studio entrance and patio. Please contact the instructor for information on tool kits to purchase prior to class at firstname.lastname@example.org
