Chant Down Babylon: Poetry as Incantation and Insurrection

This poetry workshop offers a space for participants of all levels to generate poems and to engage each other’s work with an ethos of generosity and curiosity. In this workshop, we’ll pay deep attention to questions such as: How can poetry’s incantatory potential unsettle oppressive formations of power? How can poetry as a mode of spellbinding help us manifest liberatory ways of being? Alongside reading and responding each other’s work, we will likely encounter work by folks like Zaina Alsous, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Eve Tuck, June Jordan, Layli Long Soldier, Tyree Daye, Dionne Brand, jayy dodd and others. There will be space for the instructor to offer individualized feedback to participants.
