This class will cover how to hand-build slump molds in irregular shapes. Bisqued molds can then be used to hand-build sets of clay bowls, trays, platters, or plates in the home studio. Slump molds are easy to clean, can be used over and over, and release well from greenware. This class will be a 3-hour class held online through Zoom. I will demonstrate how to make a basic slump mold and show examples of molds and the finished pieces they will make. There will be time for questions throughout the class and at the end. Enrolled students will be given directions for recycled clay pickup, completed work drop off for bisque firing, and final pick up after firing that follow current health guidelines.

Materials required:

-Tools to shape and smooth clay

-A board or box to transport work to studio for bisque firing

Clay Materials and Firing Procedures During COVID-19

To observe the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing during the pandemic, The ArtsCenter’s online ceramics classes will employ the following drop-off and pick-up procedures:

All drop-off and pick-up will occur at designated times on the back deck outsideThe ArtsCenter’s ceramics studio. Before class begins, students will be able to pick up clay at this location. After class ends, there will be a schedule for depositing work to be fired and another for picking up fired pieces.

The ceramics studio coordinator will conduct drop-off and pick-up while wearing PPE (gloves and a mask).

Clay bags will be sanitized before being distributed.

Students should bring their own bags or boxes to pick up finished pieces.

All students should take measures to protect themselves and others in any exchange of materials, including staying at least six feet apart, wearing appropriate PPE (gloves and mask) in public, and disinfecting surfaces.
