Gizlice – Saturdays, Jan 8 – Feb 19, 2-4pm (In-Person)
In this class we will learn how to harvest clay from the local environment and convert the raw material into a workable form. This class aims to help potters connect with the source of their material and with the world around them. Students will come away with clay to use in future ceramic projects, and with the tools and supplies continue harvesting clay. This class will involve some digging, lifting, and bending over, so please be prepared for some physical exertion.
Beginning wheel throwing or handbuilding is a prerequisite for this class.
*Note: No class the weekend of Jan 22.
Instructor Bio:
Ayla Gizlice is a Raleigh-based artist who works primarily in mixed media sculpture and installation. She earned a B.A. with highest honors in studio art and a B.S. in environmental science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her study of environmental science informs her work both conceptually and materially, as does her relationship with the Turkish landscape. She often works with materials found and collected from her local environment and is interested in the ecological proposition that this labor poses.
Due to the spread of the Delta Variant starting October 1, 2021, The ArtsCenter will be requiring proof of vaccination and masks (as per state-mandate) for anyone who attends our ArtSchool classes and in-person performances. This was not an easy decision to make however as a leading community organization, The ArtsCenter has a responsibility to the whole community and feel this mandate is the most sensible safety measure.
Thank you
