Pastel Landscape Painting

Class description: This class will help you gain confidence in the medium of soft pastel whether you are new to pastel painting or looking to build on your current skills. We will cover the fundamentals of materials and techniques of soft pastel. Areas of focus will include: composition, color, shapes, values, and edges. Students will learn new approaches to color through the use of underpainting techniques. As they practice, they will be able to work from their own photos or copy small original pastel paintings.

Materials needed:

PASTELS:

  • Artist quality soft pastels (please no pastels from hobby or craft stores) Terry Ludwig, Sennelier, Great American, Schminke, Unison, Richeson, Girault are all examples of brands of Artist quality soft pastels. See dakotapastels,com for photos and explanations of the different brands and degrees of softness.
  • Beginners: Sennelier has a nice set of half sticks with a wide range of colors. Instructor recommends the 60 half stick set as a minimum. You will also need a basic selection of hard pastels such as NuPastel in the 12 Assorted stick set.
  • A small flat container to hold the pastels you are using for the current painting.

PASTEL PAPER:

  • Sanded paper such as UArt ( I like 400 or 500 grit), Colourfix, Pastelmat.

OTHER MATERIALS:

  • Sketch pad
  • Pencils, Erasers (rubber, kneaded)
  • Compressed charcoal, vine charcoal, hard and soft (optional)
  • Backing board for your work – you can use foam core, gatorboard, masonite
  • Paper towels, rags, or baby wipes
  • Rubbing alcohol and small container for the alcohol
  • 3/4 to 1” brush for underpainting -something synthetic such as Simply Simmons
  • Synthetic Flat Wash brushes
  • Scissors and or mat knife
  • Ruler
  • Extra pieces of foam core to hold your paper and protect your finished pieces.
  • You can make a folio out of foam core.
  • Glassine or wax paper to protect paintings.
  • Latex gloves or hand barrier cream (optional)
  • Photos – landscapes, cloudscapes for reference photos

All ArtSchool Classes are for 15 and up unless otherwise specified.

ArtSchool Class Enrollment Policy

Classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment within 3 business days of their start will be cancelled, and any purchased tuition will be fully refunded.

Exchange and Cancellation Policy

You may request a full refund up to 5 business days prior to the start date of your course. You may request a transfer of your enrollment up to 5 business days prior to the start date of your course. We do not process requested refunds or transfers within 5 business days of the start of a class, nor after the class has begun.
