Do you like to sing? Do you have fantasies of being on a Broadway stage? Do you adore musicals and Broadway shows? Did you sing and perform in high school or college and do you miss it? If you sing in the shower, in your car, or along to your favorite soundtrack recording, then you belong in PopUp Chorus Broadway!

At our Thursday monthly events, folks come together to learn and perform two songs from our featured musical; always a well-known and beloved show. From West Side Story to Grease, and many in between, we select musicals that may have started life on the Broadway stage, or were originally released as films. Either way, the selected show is perennial favorite, and the songs are gorgeous. We spend about 40 minutes learning each song, before moving on to a final performance, which is filmed and recorded. In addition to the two songs we record, we always have one or two additional bonus songs from the featured musical as an added sing-along! This gives singers an opportunity to really dive into each show, and have a full experience of the music.

Everybody is welcome, regardless of ability! We are a drop-in chorus that invites all people who love to sing – regardless of experience – to join us. No audition or monthly commitment is required – just show up at The ArtsCenter to sing.

PopUp Broadway is conducted by Dr. Allan Friedman. Allan is the music director at Durham’s Judea Reform Congregation and artistic director of Women’s Voices Chorus, and was a choral conductor for Duke Chapel Music for eight years. He is joined by Dr. Deborah Hollis, a much-loved area accompanist and piano teacher. Deborah plays the piano as the singers learn and perform the material.

“This is a low-pressure, high-fun event. You don’t need to be able to sing well, and you don’t need to know anyone else who is going,” says conductor Allan Freidman. “No one will judge you for your voice or your knowledge. It’s a chance to make great music in a welcoming setting with minimal commitment. Singing, especially group singing, makes you feel good!”

Come be a part of the chorus (line), ensemble and cast. PopUp Broadway is everybody’s opening night, your chance to sing the show tunes you love, and maybe even discover a new song and show!
