In this hands-on 4-week class, students will build basic drawing skills. Each session we will complete mini activities and explore different artists. This class will address the art techniques using line, shape, pattern, space, proportion, mark-making, and perspective. Students will learn from the instructor, Lauren deSerres, who is a professional painter. Lauren will host demonstrations in each session and students will be able to create their own works of art using the skills they learn. In this class, students are encouraged to give each other and themselves feedback on their work in order to grow and improve.
Tools for this course:
-Regular number 2 wood pencil or Artist pencil set (you can get a pack or you can use these: H2, HB, B3, B8. HB will work as well)
-Sketchbook (suggested size is at least 8×12 inches)
-Kneaded Eraser or regular rubber eraser
-Any type of box or bag to keep art supplies together
At the end of this class, students will be able to:
-Use their tools properly (charcoal, pencil, eraser, ruler, sketchbook, sharpener)
-Create interesting marks and lines to create value and interest in their drawings
-Draw basic geometric shapes freehand and with a ruler
-Use contour line to create 3-dimensionality in their drawings
-Draw one-point perspective drawings
-Use observation and basic human proportions to create drawings
-Give constructive and positive feedback to their classmates and themselves
About instructor Lauren deSerres: I use imagery of nature and animals to create stories addressing societal and environmental issues. In my work, I explore how these issues intersect with the human narrative. I use bright, saturated colors made with layers of acrylic paint, pastel, collage, and ink.
Using images of animals and medicinal plants, I weave a story of awakening and rebirth, reflective of my own experience as a woman and an artist in the modern world. My technique consists of many processes and layers, and I believe this helps the viewer to look closely at the work, gradually unveiling hidden nuances and details, both in technique and in the stories I create.
Our world is rapidly changing, and it is only through real self- reflection, discovery and a sense of open-mindedness that we will be able to come together to save it.
