Keul – Tuesdays, Mar 9-Apr 13, 6-8:30pm (Online)

In this course, students will explore the medium of watercolor with a focus on composition, form, color theory, and technique.  Students will paint (virtually) alongside the instructor, working from the same subjects, which will be split between still-life and landscapes motifs.  Students will create one painting during each session and will work to improve their skills at painting from direct observation, increase confidence in working with water-based media, and learn to “go with the flow”, embracing the inherent challenges posed by working directly, wet-in-wet, with watercolor.  The instructor will also periodically present examples of watercolor paintings from historical and contemporary sources to help reinforce some of the concepts covered in class.

This course is open to students at all levels of experience!

About the instructor: James Keul is a Durham-based artist who has exhibited widely throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia.  He received a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and studied at the Art Students League of New York.  He has received numerous awards for his plein air landscapes and cityscapes and has ten years of experience teaching plein air painting privately to students of all levels of experience.  Examples of his work can be found on his website at www.jameskeul.com
