The South’s longest-running improvisational group begins its 40th -anniversary season Oct. 14 at The ArtsCenter with Funk of Your Soul and a new name. Known as Transactors since 1983, the company will now be called Actors Improv Theater.

Dar is celebrating the release of “How to Write a Song that Matters” with afternoon songwriting workshops! There will be breakdowns of her songs, song critiques (as many as time allows), and a discussion of ways to keep inspiring ourselves, our peers, and our communities, musical and otherwise.
Recognized as an author, educator and urban-planning expert, Williams is also penning a new book, Writing a Song That Matters, based on her popular songwriting retreats.
The collective ensemble of Jeff Cosgrove/drums, Ivo Perelman/saxophone, and Matthew Shipp/piano showcase improvisation and spontaneous composition of the highest magnitude.

Angela Winter creates experimental, ritual, and ambient music for thresholds, where synths, keys, and strings meet otherworldly vocals, shimmering drones, and overtones. Her music has been described as “beautifully haunting” (Bandcamp Daily), “stunning” (Foxy Digitalis), and “spellbinding” (Lost and Found Sounds).
A founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, multi-instrumentalist Dom Flemons is an expert player on the banjo, fife, guitar, harmonica, jug, percussion, quills, and rhythm bones, and a music scholar with a repertoire that covers over 100 years of American traditional music.
Actors Improv presents, The Seeking Season, this year’s incarnation of the company’s annual holiday musical. This two-act improvised play follows six characters in the Big City as they try to find something: the perfect gift, meaning, a rekindled spark, a lost loved one, success—whatever the audience suggests. Guest actors Parker Bach and Hailey Brown join company regulars Greg Hohn (director), Bart Hubbard, Dana Marks, and Steve Scott. Piano accompanist Glenn Mehrbach will team with guest musicians.

The Other Half, A world premiere play written and directed by Mark Cornell, Starring Kelly McDaniel and Ryan McDaniel. Winner of the Charles Getchell Award, The Other Half tells the story of Michelle, a tough, but damaged young woman trying to find her place between identical twins Luke and John. Set in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains in Placerville, California, The Other Half is a love story about rivalry, passion, heartbreak, and bonds that can never be broken.
