It started in the closet, when I was 8 years old. Amid coats and dresses, sitting on the bathroom stool I’d dragged in there for a perch, I started filling notebooks with stories. I wrote and wrote, conjuring characters and plots of every kind, enjoying those quiet hours alone with my imagination.
I studied creative writing as an undergraduate at Columbia University (with Ben Marcus, Jonathan Ames, and Thomas Beller) and later earned an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where I studied with Marilynne Robinson, Ethan Canin, Jim McPherson, Elizabeth McCracken, and Edward Carey.
I have taught writing to students of all ages. I believe everyone has a unique voice that deserves to be heard and that writing can be a joyful, empowering process that enriches our humanity. The only thing I love more than writing is teaching writing.
