This course will cover the basics of working with clay slabs to construct functional wares and sculptural objects. Students will learn to use templates to design their creations, work with soft and leather-hard slabs, and surface design and glazing techniques.
In this course, we will use traditional weaving techniques and non-traditional materials to create both sculptural and functional vessels. There will be instruction in methods of weaving and netting with adjustments for different material tensions. Bring your plastic bags, random bits of rope, scrap wood and more! Class is beginner friendly and open to all levels.
This is not a handbuilding or wheelthrowing class -- students will learn to combine ceramics with drawing and pattern-making through a variety of surface design techniques. It's recommended that students have some experience working with clay, but beginners are welcome too.
