Songwriting Workshop with Joe Newberry and his special guest Claire Holley!

About the Workshop
Award-winning songwriter Joe Newberry will help you focus on making your good songs even better, or get you started if you only have a trunk full of ideas. The workshop will use examples of different types of songs—narrative, chorus/verse, free-form—with an eye and ear toward simplifying the words to uncover the heart of the song. Through word play and writing, writing, and more writing, the song in your head can become the song on your lips!

Joe and Claire will share stories from the road, their successes and challenges, examples of writings in progress, and they’ll talk about his songwriting and performing process.  Then it is time to get down to the business of writing and working on songs. Students will be encouraged to share works in progress, wherever they are in the process, even if their journey is just beginning.

About Claire Holley

Singer/songwriter Claire Holley grew up listening to her Dad’s records and soaking up her grandmother’s jazz piano playing as a little girl in the deep south. She began writing songs in college, but it was while living in North Carolina that she started getting regular airplay on WUNC’s Back Porch Music and embraced a life in music. Claire’s songs are filled with “simple truths and timeless imagery that cannot be worn away with repeated listenings” says No Depression, and Huffington Post called Claire’s voice “achingly beautiful.” She lives in Los Angeles and will release a new album, Where I Lived, this fall.

The workshop will be followed by a 90 minute performance by Joe and Claire from 4-5:30pm.

I wrote one of my best songs at one of Joe’s workshops. He’s a gifted musician and teacher. I will always be indebted to him for the song about my mother. – Rebecca Newton

Public Show at 4:00pm! What a great way to spend a late afternoon – with North Carolina’s favorite singer and storyteller, Joe Newberry and his special guest Claire Holley.
