Hello AfterSchool Arts Immersion Parents, Guardians, and Families!
As we are nearing the end of the calendar year and approaching winter break, we would like to give you updates on our winter break schedule, residencies, and what to expect starting January 2022.
Our previous residency with artist Larissa Wood focused on the creation of a picture book, from brainstorming to writing and illustrating to publishing and binding a finished copy to take home. Students learned about elements of writing and publishing, including how to choose character traits and illustrate them creatively.
In the current residency with Mirna, students are exploring “The History and Art of Paper”. So far, they have inscribed words on reclaimed clay tablets, made their own paper by weaving together paper strips, and built paper mâché bowls to paint and decorate. Most recently, they constructed paper lanterns using watercolor paper and a simple hole-punch technique.
The last day of AAI for 2021 is Friday, December 17th. We will not be offering winter break camps — AAI will return in 2022 on Monday, January 3rd.
When we return in January, we will be starting a new artist residency with Ivan Liotchev, who will be focusing on the history and art of graffiti. In this residency, Ivan and students will look at how people started using graffiti, how it evolved over time, and how it is perceived. Students will have the opportunity to create their own pieces as well as collaborate with their peers to create a piece that reflects what they learned about this art form.
Beginning with the next MiniCamp on Monday, January 24, we will start charging for registration. The fees are as follows: $80 for the public, $68 for patrons. If you are interested in becoming a patron, please contact Development Director Wendy Smith at wsmith@artscenterlive.org. If you remember, our fall minicamps were covered by a grant, but that grant expires this month. Registration for MiniCamp will still be capped at 20 students, so we encourage you to register early! The link to register is here: January 24th MiniCamp.
Finally, we have been working on winter holiday activities with students during their activity and quiet times, enabling them to learn about different celebrations held at this time of year. We hope that you have a happy, safe, and healthy holiday season – see you in 2022!
