Folk’s not dead folks! Thursday, April 3, at the ArtsCenter, feast your ears on this fantastic lineup of plucky old-time and blues revivalists.

Ashby is a songwriter and performer from eastern NC. Growing up on the coast, they listened to everything from musical theater and 80s pop to modern folk and old time bluegrass. They are studying at UNC to earn a degree in Ecology and Music and hope to put out an EP of original songs soon!

The Grape Soda Society is made up of Winston-Salem natives Katie Nichols (fiddle, guitar, vocals) and Duncan MacMillan (banjo, guitar, vocals). From trying (and failing) to start a band in high school to playing together in UNC’s Carolina Bluegrass Band, the two have a long shared musical history. Now, drawing from bluegrass, folk, and old time, they play and sing a bubbly cocktail of tunes.

Three Tar Heel tunesters, Eliza MeyerNick Tutweiler, and Max Jacobson, come together as The New Carolina Tar Heels to perform classic stringband music with fiddle, banjo, and guitar in the old-time way.

Bill Moore and his Secret Admirers may as well have wandered straight out of a 1955 Sock Hop in small-town North Carolina. With a raw blend of old-time, Piedmont blues, doo-wop and electricity, they recreate the crackling intensity of a burgeoning rock and roll still uncertain of its future. The band is headed by Bill Moore, a Chapel Hill-born and bred guitarist, banjoist and songwriter; on second guitar is the fantastic Sophie Lowry of Durham and on doghouse bass is Winston-Salem’s own Stuart “StuBob” MacMillan.
