‘Realm’ came from a dream that playwright Traut actually had in which a red haired woman, immersed indoors in Fall leaves, vocalizes that the role of therapy is …to learn to live in the realm of love. After waking, Traut decided to write out a dialogue in which a female figure, reprised by Anoo Tree Brod, and a male figure, played now by Cooper Thornton, explore and debate the meaning of what the red haired woman has revealed.
An enthusiastic response to the play at an invitational reading at the Last Frontier Theater Conference in Valdez, Alaska in 2010, led to the performance at the Edingurgh in Fringe in 2011 where Anoo Tree Brod won praise for her role, and the play itself garnered a 4 star review from a London journal.
In 2025, the Perihelion Board agreed it was time to bring The Realm of Love or Folding Laundry to our home audience. However this year the production will be expanded from 2 to 4 characters as the Red Haired Woman will be an actual narrative character, played by Carol Oleson, and Kate Finlayson will dance the Ruler of the Realm.
Galloway Ridge commissioned Traut to write 3 new flash plays to add to her ensemble that had previously been performed at the ArtsCenter in 2024. The five, including a revival of Julie Tomkovick’s Deliberative Bodies, will open this program which will run as follows:
To Stay or Not to Stay; What’re You Lookin’ At?; The Anniversary Surprise; Deliberative Bodies by Julie Tomkovick; The T-Shirt; and If You Won’t I….”
Seasoned actress, Margay Whitlock will join our Perihelion company of experienced actors: Cooper Thornton, Mary Beth Clark, Paul Deblinger, Anoo Tree Brod and Kate Finlayson. Audience members who saw the three flash plays at the Artscenter or the five at Galloway Ridge will be offered the fun of seeing some actors’ roles switched.
For the record: Karyn did write ‘REALM’ while doing laundry.
