PopUp Chorus Broadway!

On Friday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m., PopUp Chorus Broadway will turn Wicked – just in time for the cinematic release of Wicked: For Good!  Whether you’re an Elphaba, Glinda, or somewhere in between, singers of all ages will celebrate friendship, magic, and the music of one of Broadway’s longest running productions.

What is PopUp Chorus Broadway?

Do you like to sing? Do you adore musicals and singing along to your favorite soundtrack recordings? Have you thought about joining a chorus but are too busy to commit? Do you sing in the shower or in your car? Did you sing and perform in college or school but don’t have an opportunity to sing now? Have you had fantasies of being on a Broadway stage? Do you take every opportunity you can manage to watch musicals on the stage or the screen? In short, are you a musical theater nerd? If you answered “YES!” to any of these questions, you belong in PopUp Chorus Broadway!

At our events conductor Sean Grier teaches two show tunes and when everyone is ready, we do a dress rehearsal, and end with a filmed performance. This is your chance to feel the joy of singing with others. It’s easy and fun!

Everybody is welcome, regardless of vocal ability or experience. We are a drop-in chorus that invites all people who love to sing to join us. No audition or monthly commitment is required – just show up and sing at this low-pressure, high-fun event for lovers of musical theater! You don’t need to be able to sing well, and you don’t need to know anyone else who is going! This is a chance to make great music in a welcoming setting and to feel the joy of connecting and singing with others.

Come be a part of the chorus (line), ensemble and cast! PopUp Broadway is everybody’s opening night and your chance to sing the show tunes you love!

Meet you conductor, Sean Grier!

When not teaching undergraduate courses in music education or conducting Treble Voice Glee Club at UNC, PopUp Chorus Broadway conductor, Sean Grier PhD., can be found singing along to his favorite soundtrack albums! If pressed, this lover of musical theater would tell you his top shows include West Side Story, Rent, Chicago, South Pacific, Les Misérables and Wicked, (but he will not be limited to just those!)

After completing his undergraduate degrees in vocal performance and music education at Michigan State University, Sean taught middle and high school chorus at Durham School of the Arts (DSA), where he was a musical pied piper for young singers. One of Sean’s education colleagues has observed, “Sean made chorus cool, even for boys! His students adored him because he created a safe, welcoming, and family-like home in his classroom. He is a truly special teacher.”

After a hugely successful nine years teaching at DSA, Sean left to earn his doctorate in music education at The University of Michigan. Sean is excited to be back in North Carolina, the state that he calls home. He now teaches in the departments of music at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sean is excited about leading PopUp Chorus Broadway events for everyone who loves musical theater. He will tell you that dreams truly do come true when you sing with us at PopUp Broadway!
