Giselle Nera
Sept. 26th – Nov. 4th (Opening: October 10th)
Bio:
Giselle Nera is a multidisciplinary artist currently residing in Durham, NC whose lifelong love of art has led to two Bachelor of Arts degrees from UNCG (Dance Studies and Studio Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design) as well as over ten years of experience in the non-profit arts sector. One of her favorite pastimes is exploring different forms and materials of art, leading to a variety of works in her portfolio and fun life experiences, such as her photography being featured on the cover of “Nude” by Nuala Ní Chonchúir and her fiber arts being a yarn bomb installation at The Scrap Exchange’s thrift store. When she’s not creating or curating, Giselle enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Josh, and spoiling their senior black cat, Satriani.
Artist Statement:
“This collection explores the juxtaposition of intense color and moody shadows through a series of haunting photographs, digitally altered dreamscapes, and atmospheric mixed media paintings. Having always been drawn to artists, such as Caravaggio, who were masters chiaroscuro and elevated deep shadows, I wanted to recreate in my own style those eerie and almost liminal spaces not afraid of the dark with digitally altered photography and detailed mixed media pieces that host layers upon layers of (sometimes) organized chaos. Paired with crows that are always watching and cemeteries that are perpetually in autumn, I hope that you enjoy this journey through my exploration of the shadows that are all encompassing and always abound.”
