Spotlight on Silent Auction Artist Catharine Carter

June 5, 2015

I was introduced to fairytales, fables and myths as a child. My father who was a performer could read the old stories with great expression, making them come to life for me. Imagination was celebrated, and make-believe tales were a nightly event, complete with costumes and props. I studied painting and printmaking at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. For the next 35 years, I operated a portrait photography studio from my home in Chapel Hill until I decided to pursue my fine art full time. I try to emulate the warm, graphic qualities of antique bookplates and gravures by working in sepia tones and adding texture screens.

“The University of North Carolina Collective Memory Series casts a new light on symbolic, powerful imagery of campus, culminating in beautiful, thought-provoking photomontage. This collection is a tribute to the University and the collective memory of everyone who has marveled at its beauty.”

Catharine has generously donated a framed archival print from her Collective Memory Series to The ArtsCenter’s Silent Auction, on display throughout the month of June in the Nicholson Gallery.  To place a bid for this photograph, visit our box office  or call us at (919) 929-2787.  Bids starting at $75 will be accepted until 5PM on June 28th.
