Lyudmila Tomova was born in Sofia, Bulgaria where she studied Illustration at the Sofia’s Academy of Fine Arts and the five-year Special School of Fine Arts with an emphasis on Classical realism. In 1990 she was able to escape the communist regime in Bulgaria and immigrate to the U.S. In 1994, she received a B.F.A. in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City with high honors. She’s been an illustrator, designer and a fine artist, and always pursuing her true passion – painting. Her style has gradually shifted from realistic to abstract and conceptual imagery. In a search for artistic purification, her art has come to a true evolution and maturity of style. She works mostly in acrylic, enamel, pen and ink. Her work can be found in myriad of public and private art collections both, in the United States and abroad, and has been part of numerous exhibitions worldwide. She currently lives and works in Cary, North Carolina with her husband, two children, and two exotic pets – a bearded dragon and a ball python.
“Everything moves, even a rock. The ever-changing states in man and nature are a constant source of inspiration for my work. I begin each painting with a single word in mind – ocean, bull, sky – and finish it with an abstract version of it. A fleeting moment is captured and transformed by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles. The brush strokes are moving, pushing, emerging and overwhelming, but never still and quiet. I paint alla prima using acrylic, enamel or inks.”
