Tangled Threads: A Creative Reuse Journey by Rachel Moon

Rachel Moon- Bio

I am a local artist and sewing teacher at the Arts Center. I am currently teaching Beginning Sewing and Basic Alterations, Continued Alterations, and Collage Your Clothes for the Fall Session of ArtSchool 2024.

I have been a professional alterationist and sewist for over 15 years. As an artist, I have worked with reused, discarded materials to create art and fashion pieces for 30 years. I became a sewist and alterationist because fashion has always been a passion for me, but I was especially motivated by my passion for environmentalism and reducing landfill waste. As a person who walks everywhere as my main mode of transportation, I find things on the ground that I incorporate into my work as you will see with the pieces in this show. I love to categorize my art as Trash Art because so much of it was ground sourced or on its way to being thrown away, like the fabric scraps with inspector’s tags stapled on them in What Remains. I hope that these pieces inspire you to rethink what you consider waste or trash and to find the beauty in everyday things.
