Welcome to our new Ceramics Studio Coordinator, Angela Eastman! We had the chance to learn more about Angela and her plans for ceramics at The ArtsCenter.
Can you tell us about your background and experience in visual art?
AE: I’ve always loved exploring materiality in my artwork, and I work in many different mediums to create sculptural and functional pieces. In addition to working in ceramics, I make baskets, jewelry, paper arts, and furniture through my design studio, Flag Mountain Studio. I learned many of my technical skills through doing the Core Fellowship program at Penland School of Crafts in WNC, and I also recently completed an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. I moved back to North Carolina last year after a decade away and am excited to continue developing my art practice back in my home state.
What excites you about working at The ArtsCenter?
AE: I’m really looking forward to engaging with the arts community in Carrboro and developing lasting relationships with the students, instructors, and staff of The ArtsCenter. It’s especially great to reconnect with The ArtsCenter since this was where I first started taking ceramics classes as a youth many years ago!
What is your vision for the ceramics studio?
AE: As I get to know the existing community of the ceramics studio, I plan to maintain many of the operations of the studio while expanding the scope of the offerings to include more technical workshops and interdisciplinary classes. As the studio is able to expand capacity and welcome more students and assistants back to in-person creating, I welcome community input on the direction of the studio!
When you are not making art, how do you spend your time?
AE: I love to hike along the Eno with my dog, Frankie, and stop for a swim in these warmer months! I also work at a farm in Cedar Grove, and I enjoy finding fresh ways to cook and bake with our produce.
